A strong finish

Making camp on our last evening

Our hotel stay in Manistee was timed well, as little Harper was sick the whole time, making sleep non-existent for most of us during our stay. Wondering if he would recover before we got back on the road, we looked ahead at the map and the amount of kilometres to go before our end destination in Grand Rapids. My goal was to finish with as few nights as possible as the lack of sleep made the days even more difficult. Reuben’s goal was to end strong with some long biking days. We were able to satisfy both goals by finishing our trip a few days earlier than planned, travelling 75 km/day over the last 3 days with only 2 more nights at camp with Harper in the tent. …continue reading this post »

Morning Routines

I cherish the special times I get to spend with Eden on this trip. We usually get alone time when Heidi is putting Harper to bed or when she is feeding him in a quiet area. It is a nice coincidence that these times I get with my daughter are during some of the most well-lit moments of the day!

Riding Beside Lake Michigan

Harper’s been a pretty good sleeper from the start. We’ve had our rough nights and days but overall he sleeps great, especially now that he’s older.  He’ll sleep a solid 12 hours at night with 2 good naps in the day – very predictable. The only thing is – he doesn’t sleep well when we’re camping. For our 4 camping trips this summer, he woke at least 4-7 times a night, often needing to nurse in order to go back to sleep. And just because he goes back to sleep, doesn’t mean I can get to sleep easily in a cold tent and unfamiliar place. …continue reading this post »

Changing course: heading into Leelanau

DSC 9774 150x150 Changing course: heading into LeelanauWe had a fantastic breakfast Saturday morning at Bob and Laura’s house and then headed out into the wind around 10:30am. Soon it was drizzling again and we decided to put both kids in the trailer, a first for this trip as I haven’t been strong enough to pull them very long before this. It was an incredibly empowering experience for me to climb hills and traverse so much ground with my stronger legs pulling both kids. Despite the cold and rain, it was a rush. …continue reading this post »
