Arriving Home

Posted by on September 13th, 2012 13 Comments

Our last post here was almost four months ago when we were just a few days ride from arriving home in Hamilton after over a year on our bikes. During those last days in the saddle, we talked about writing up our arrival immediately and getting it up on the blog the day after we got home – after all, those exciting moments are best conveyed while fresh in the mind – but that did not happen. In fact, writing clearly fell by the wayside after our return, and boy has time flown since then! We busied ourselves with home life and settling into our city and community, and we avoided thinking about the end of our trip for quite a while. Maybe it was a defense mechanism to allow us to escape coming to terms with our journey coming to a close. However, the final days of our trip as well as our experiences upon our return are filled with important events and emotions that are worth documenting and sharing. It may take some time for us to catch up to the present time – but by all means, lets pick up where we left off!

After our rest in Geneva on the Finger Lakes, we quickly reconnected with the Erie Canal trail, blasting through Rochester without realizing we were in the city at all (off-road trails are great!). We crossed paths with four other touring cyclists within a few hours of each other, including Peter – who, at an inspirational 69 years old, has toured the world throughout his life, recently retiring and off on a cycle trip towards the Maritimes in Canada.

Freedom to fly

Posted by on May 27th, 2011 10 Comments

Despite some of the cold, wet, and windy weather we have encountered so far, we have seen plenty of gorgeous evenings and afternoons. Love this photo of Eden taking advantage of one of those moments to fly the kite she has been waiting all winter to play with!

Clear skies and warm weather were such a great welcome the morning of our departure day – especially after a week of rain. We awoke with queasy stomachs and the realization that the day we have been planning and gearing for over the last two years was finally here. Now we just had to get on our bikes.

First helping of toys and crafts for the kids. We'll be switching things around every few weeks at second hand stores.

We had, predictably, been up late the night before accomplishing an assortment of tasks. Everything from the final packing of all the ‘things’ we would be bringing with us, to filing tax paperwork, sewing of additional DIY gear, and putting items left behind into storage. Despite all this there were many things we did not complete – so we hope that we can still work on a few tasks from road.

For the last three weeks we have been living with some incredibly generous friends. They have opened up their house for the invasion of a family with two young kids – no small undertaking! We appreciate them so much and cannot thank them enough for what they have given to us through this arrangement. Faye and Rich: you are awesome!

Thank you Faye and Rich!

Our rush through breakfast and our horror at the final weight of our loaded bikes lead to a short ride back to our home for our Farewell Party. We were absolutely floored and honoured at the many people who were there early on a Saturday morning with words of blessing, encouragement and prayers of safety flowing from their lips. Saying goodbye is truly hard, and our friends have truly blessed us on our way.
